Playing Dress-Up

At the ornate dresser among costume jewelry,

powdered rouge, and

red fingernail polish, I play dress-up standing in my mother’s stilettos tall as a skyscraper overlooking a noisy city, her chandelier earrings dripping from my teenage earlobes like moonlight, her floppy straw-hat covering my drawn on eyebrows.

From underneath this sunhat I am a teenage girl, I am a woman in the world that awaits me beyond this mirror where I know I will grow more human, more flawed, more beautiful.
